After meeting with Hollywood film supremo David Geffen one of our great leaders has decided to get tough on file sharing. As announced in June, the enforcement regime will be run by Ofcom. But under the revised timescale proposals Lord Peter Mandelson himself would be granted powers to decide which technical measures to bring into law by statutory instrument and when. The government said it would also significantly speed up the introduction of sanctions because the original schedule - which may not have seen a regime come into force until 2012 - "might be too long to wait given the pressure put on the creative industries by piracy". If the government could speed up the introduction of a decent optical fibre internet back bone for the country rather than brown tonguing some American movie mogul I am sure that would be much better for the UK rather than more ridiculous laws to penalise the average parent and their kids. Sanctions against illegal filesharers will include blocking access to download sites and reducing broadband speeds. I am sure of course fines will quickly come into the range of penalties to be levied against 'evil' file sharers (or rather their parents).
